Manchester City Councillor Mike Amesbury, Executive Member for Arts & Leisure has given the Championships his support and stated "On behalf of Manchester City Council I am delighted to welcome back Europe's elite Masters cyclists for the second European Masters Track Championships. This event forms a valuable part of Manchester's Major Sports Event Strategy and kicks off an exciting time for the City's many cycling fans who are also looking forward to the first Skyride on 2nd August plus further elite cycling events coming thick and fast in the autumn with the National Track Championships, Track World Cup Classic and Paracycling World Championships all at the Manchester Velodrome."Masters track cycling is open to men and women competitors over the age of 30 who compete in 5 year age bands 30-34, 35-39 and so on right up to 70 years plus. Competition is fiercely competitive but friendly nonetheless. Great camaraderie exists between the riders and lifelong friendships are formed between competitors of all nationalities.
The 2009 European Masters is sponsored by Manchester City Council as part of the Council's programme of world class, international sporting events.
